Why is Alaska the Perfect Salmon Fishing Location?
The Crisp Cold Waters in Alaska Provide for the Best Salmon Fishing!
Alaska has one of the best overall environments for Salmon fishing; Sitka is particularly ideal because of the proximity to the Gulf of Alaska and because of the freshwater to the saltwater and the protection it receives from the bay. Salmon prefer cold with a lot of feed waters hence making the Northern Pacific Ocean an optimal location for Salmon. Anglers can target five species of Pacific salmon: king salmon, silver salmon, sockeye, silver and pink. Sitka has the highest saltwater sport fishing catch rate for King Salmon in the State. There is no other Alaska location that even comes close.
Alaska Salmon spawn in the freshwater rivers, streams and lakes across the state and then travel hundreds and even thousands of miles deep into the Gulf of Alaska. A natural diet of krill, herring, small fish and shrimp, combined with the rigors of swimming through icy waters, gives Alaska Salmon their distinctive color, flavor and remarkable texture. When they return to freshwater to spawn they navigate back to the exact spot where they were hatched from their eggs. In the process of migrating from ocean to stream, the salmon build bulk up with a reserve of nutrients and fat – readying for the run upstream and fasting they endure during their trip to the spawning grounds.
The cold waters of the Pacific Ocean near Sitka make perfect conditions for Salmon Fishing. The warmer months of May to September combine the best weather of the year in Alaska with scores of migrating Salmon.
